If my previous post wasn’t enough, I have another South Dakota stupid government report:

The Board of Regents is fine-tuning a campus emergency alert system after a summer test uncovered problems in delivering a test message.

The system was tested in June on the six state university campuses and the two specialty schools for the deaf and the visually impaired that are administered by the regents.

At a meeting Friday in Spearfish, the board discussed the campus alert system and the updates.

“We learned a lot from the summer test,” said Monte Kramer, the vice president of administrative services for the regents. “What we learned caused us to rethink how we’re putting data in the system.”

The system contacts students, faculty and staff through landline and cellular phones, text messaging, e-mail and instant messaging.

Of the eight campuses, six had between 30 and 61 percent of those contacted confirm they received the message. The remaining two had less than 30 percent confirm the notification.

Everyone will find out much quicker by hearing the shots ring out.But the government doesn’t want students to defend themselves by allowing concealed carry.

To see what happens when citizens can shoot back, see this post.

Keloland does a report on the issue of a sales tax free weekend:

With shoppers hitting the store to find wedding gifts, birthday presents and back-to-school clothes, South Dakota retailers are getting busy — but not as busy as those in other states.

17 states in the U.S. are deeming this weekend a tax-free holiday, making certain items purchased exempt from sales tax. But while the other states are enjoying the break, South Dakotans will still be paying the sales tax.

The idea behind a tax-free holiday is to muster up some big business for retailers and give the consumer a tax break on certain purchases. The bill to do that in South Dakota failed during last year’s legislative session.

Christy Benson is a resident and shopper in Sioux Falls in favor of a tax-free weekend.

“I would definitely do it. I’ve never heard of it but I think it would definitely help with before school,” Benson said. “Everybody’s out buying stuff. I think that would be a great idea.”

The bill may have failed because eliminating a sales tax would require revenue from somewhere else, since South Dakota does not require an income or corporate tax.

Does the idea of instead reducing spending even touch one brain cell in the head of the liberal media? It would be nice to explain the concept on their political web site, but I guess I am too conservative for that environment.

From the Madison Daily Reader:

Immigration officials were in Howard last month and served arrest warrants on five individuals who were employed at Dakota Beef.

Tim Counts, public relations officer for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), said Wednesday (today) that four individuals were arrested on warrants June 24 and a fifth person was arrested the following week at his home.

Two were arrested on administrative charges and three were charged criminally.

From Ernest Istook:

“Betcha can’t eat just one.”

Here is a report that shows how citizen activism can prevent tax increases:

The Hughes County Commission voted 3-2 against raising the county’s wheel tax by $2 a wheel. It would have raised $160,000 for road maintenance.

Dave Braun told commissioners he would lead an effort to refer it to a public vote if they approved it.

Braun led a referral of a similar wheel tax increase in 1995 that was rejected by 70 percent of the voters.

Maintaining public roads is a legitimate function of a limited government. The funding should come from within the current state budget, instead of using tax monies to cater to special interests through economic development projects.

There is no doubt that abortion and clean government are big issues in South Dakota as they are on the ballot. But how those two issues play out on election day has already been influenced by the humanist indoctrination that is found as the religion of the government’s public education system. Freeing the pre-born and restoring a limited government is now an uphill battle. That is why I consider the huge effort to advance the government school monopoly into pre-school and day cares as the biggest issue that we are faced with as conservatives today. And in South Dakota the RINOs are leading the charge

Bob Ellis has a post that covers Saturday’s SamsSphere Sioux Falls event. Clearly the event was a big step toward uniting the conservative movement in South Dakota and Ellis points to a big development in that regard:

Look for some significant changes coming to the South Dakota blogosphere in the next day or two. Gideon is doing most of the technical work on it, but it’ll be a team effort of several blogs once it’s done.

Gideon is “Gid” of the recently launched SD Wingnuts blog. I noticed a lot of fire in the belly.

Welcome to the Shovel!

The Shovel is essentially a showcase site, bringing you the best from the SD Conservative Blogosphere. Member blogs are encouraged to post items from their own sites that they think the rest of us might enjoy/need to see.

You will notice that the Shovel has comments turned off. We decided not to have any discussion on these pages, since it would take away from the discussions at the respective sites. It just wouldn’t make sense to have discussions of the same article in two places — and after all, we’re all about common sense, right? We hope you will take some time to check out our member sites, and let them know you’re there by dropping them a comment or two.

So thanks for stopping by! We hope you enjoy the best of the SD Conservative Blogosphere!
